Most religious traditions bear two tracks, or curriculums, through which to develop one’s self spiritually. The first is foundational and the second, involving the realm of the mystical or that which is inclusive of, yet beyond foundations. These latter tracks are the ultimate koan, the religious or spiritual practice for which all other practices were but a preparation. And that is, the practice of your very life, and involves that which drives you, lights you up, and incites passion in your heart, in your pelvis, and in your soul. In the yogic and Buddhist traditions, this track is called Tantra and it’s considered the quickest, no-holds-barred route to enlightenment. Widely misunderstood, we’ll take a forthright and applicable approach to Tantra. This workshop is taught by long-time practitioner and teacher, Kimberley Theresa Lafferty, of the Seattle area and will include lecture, discussion, and meditation.

Modern neuroscience shows that the words we use to describe pain, actions taken when in pain, and even what others tell us about our pain can have significant impact on how much, and even how long, we experience pain.
 
This has important implications for practitioners who work with clients in pain—especially those with persistent pain. The purpose of this workshop is to help Yoga practitioners improve their understanding of pain so they can work more effectively with clients in pain.

Yoga for a Healthy Mind and Nervous System with Angela Grace Fri, Jun 2, 2017 at 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Yoga heals the mind/body disconnection, but is this a completely metaphysical concept? Is there a physiological basis? The answer, of course, is yes. In this module we will explore yoga's profound ability to shift our physiology and alter our nervous system. We will draw heavily on Patanjali's Yoga Sutras as a therapeutic path, discuss the basics of polyvagal theory, and explore how our nervous system interacts with that of others. Through conscious practice of pranayama, asana, and mindfulness meditation we will delve into yoga's ability to either up regulate or down regulate our nervous system. Learning to use these techniques as medicine for your mental health is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself and your students.
 
This training is 40 hours of Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Credits or toward your 300 hour Yoga Alliance Certification through Live Well Studio.

 Heading toward a place of pristine mountainous solitude, overlooking the Oregon coast, we’ll traverse off the beaten path to settle into this ever-deepening stillness that is the doorway to the unbounded heart. This weekend is for serious and prepared seekers who have cultivated a regular meditation practice and have attended meditation immersion modules 3 or 6 at a minimum. Drop everything to drop in to three days and two nights of silence and the sweetest and subtlest of practices: meditation, yoga, deep sleep and dreaming ourselves awake. Many of us have formed restrictive habits of breathing that limit our ability to take a full breath and thus also limit our potential to be fully and healthfully alive. Breathing is linked to the function of the heart and circulatory system, nervous system, gastrointestinal system, and affects your mental well-being, concentration, and energy level. In this series, we will explore our breathing habits and retrain the breath patterns to be open and full. This is not a pranayam series. We will use gentle movement, investigative exercise, and mindful awareness to understand and awaken our breath. Please bring a journal.

Most familiarly, savasana (corpse pose) is known as a posture of rest, or even as a posture representing metaphorical death -- of dying to the old version of ourselves and being born into a newer version after each practice. But what else might savasana be able to teach us about death, and therefore about life? We live, generally speaking, in a death-averse culture. But cultivating an intimacy with death is perhaps the one thing that can help us to cultivate intimacy with life. During these three hours of discussion and supine meditation, we'll discuss savasana not as merely a posture of spiritual or metaphorical death but as one that is a potent reminder of our situation on this earth. Prerequisite: A willingness and readiness to engage in frank discussions about life and death, and to participate in death meditation.
