Feldenkrais
What is the Feldenkrais Method®?
The Feldenkrais Method is a remarkable approach to movement, learning and change. The Method is based on principles of physics, neurology, physiology and the martial arts. Private Feldenkrais lessons are a one-to-one approach tailored to a client’s unique needs. Using hands-on guidance, clients are slowly and gently moved in ways that deeply influence their musculoskeletal organization at a neurological level, emphasizing the conditions under which the nervous system learns best. Through these lessons, overall functioning improves, a sense of well-being develops, and problems diminish or resolve. Clients build their awareness toward sensing their own movement patterns, exploring new ways of moving, and integrating more choice into their movement habits.
Why would a Feldenkrais private lession help me?
When we are born, our brain maps are virtually undeveloped. As we learn to move, sense and talk, the neurology of the brain is developed and refined. As we continue to mature, the brain refines our movements by shedding off what it perceives as unused patterns in our neurology. We rely on fewer and fewer patterns of thought and action; our movements become dominated by habits. For many, these habitual patterns become outmoded and dysfunctional. They lead to certain muscle groups and joints having to do most of the work, causing stiffness, stress, pain, compression on the spine, limited movement, and poor posture.
Feldenkrais Method recognizes our unlimited capacity to learn. During a private session, the process of self-exploration is developed within a series of varied and enhanced sensorimotor experiences. This increased awareness then frees us from the restricted habitual patterns we have deleoped over our lifetime, allowing new patterns of thinking, moving and feeling to emerge. It is helpful for those with restricted joint movement and chronic pain, as well as those with neurological and developmental difficulties. Athletes, actors, dancers, gymnists, movement educators, body workers and others have also benefitted from this approach to invigorate their physical and creative pursuits.
